Deepika Padukone shocked the B-town, two years back, when she revealed that she had been suffering from depression. Now, the 30-year-old star has further opened up about her battle with the condition. She thanked her mother for her support in getting through the difficult period in her life at a national public awareness campaign about mental health, ‘Dobara Poocho,’ held in Delhi on October 10, 2016 (on the World Mental Health Day 2016). She broke down into tears while speaking at the function.

“If it wasn’t for you, mom, I wouldn’t be here. My mother immediately knew what I was going through. We reached out for help and thanks to my doctors, I’m fine today,” Deepika Padukone was quoted as saying by a national daily (The Hindu).

Padukone organized the campaign for her NGO, The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF), as part of her initiative to create awareness about the mental health in India. The Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) and The Indian Medical Association (IMA) have also joined hands with TLLLF for the initiative.

Padukone in an interview with Hindustan Times revealed that she had gone through depression during the making of ‘Happy New Year’ (released worldwide on 24 October 2014). She then consulted a doctor (psychologist) and came out of the condition as a winner.

Padukone said in the interview, on a shooting day, she had fainted due to exhaustion. She started feeling like nothing was going right in her life. Over a period, her condition got worse. Then, once, while talking to her mother, she broke down. Her mother identified the problem, and consulted a psychologist friend, Anna Chandy, to know the seriousness of the issue.

The actor talked to Dr. Chandy. The doctor concluded that Padukone was suffering from anxiety and depression. But the star refused to take medication from Chandy. Later, she met Dr. Shyam Bhatt, a psychologist in Bengaluru for a second opinion. Finally, the actor accepted her condition. Then, she took medication and got well soon.

Top Five Things Padukone Highlighted about Depression

  1. The stigma about depression must end as its is an illness, not a choice. Padukone says she is happy if her story empowers some people to share theirs.
  2. Padukone says an individual with depression needs support, especially from the family. She tells a newspaper that she sees people (with depression) suffering and their family members feel a sense of shame about it, which is unhelpful.
  3. By all accounts, Padukone had the ideal life: stardom, a luxurious home, and plenty of money. Still, in spite of the picture-perfect life, the actor was fighting debilitating depression. Padukone notes that depression is not about what you have or don’t have.
  4. Padukone says that most people talk about physical fitness. She emphasizes that mental health is equally important.
  5. Padukone says being depressed and being sad are two different states. Individuals going through a mental illness like depression don’t look so, while someone sad will just look sad.
